The current landscape of employment and automation presents a concerning reality for women, as they hold a significant majority of jobs categorized as 'high risk' of automation, accounting positions for 70.2% of such. These jobs are characterized by a higher likelihood of various tasks being automated. This situation is further influenced by age dynamics, as women tend to be more engaged in part-time work as they grow older. Unfortunately, part-time work is often concentrated in occupations that are particularly vulnerable to automation, exacerbating the challenges faced by women in the workforce.
In light of these circumstances, a report published by Harvard Business Review sheds light on the potential scale of occupational transitions that women across the globe may need to navigate. The study estimates that between 40 million and 160 million women worldwide could find themselves in a position where transitioning to new occupations becomes necessary. However, successfully making these transitions requires women to possess certain key attributes.
Firstly, women need to acquire and cultivate a diverse range of skills to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving job market. The demand for skills is constantly shifting, with an increasing emphasis on technological expertise and adaptability. By equipping themselves with the right skills, women can enhance their employability and successfully adapt to the new world of work.
Secondly, mobility plays a crucial role in this scenario. Women who are open to geographical mobility and willing to explore job opportunities in different locations have a better chance of securing employment in sectors less susceptible to automation. Lastly, being tech-savvy is essential for women to thrive in the face of automation. As technology continues to shape various industries, proficiency in digital tools, software, and emerging technologies becomes increasingly indispensable. Women who possess a strong grasp of technology and actively engage with it will have a competitive edge and greater resilience in the transforming job market.
However, despite the importance of these attributes, women face significant barriers that hinder their progress in acquiring skills, embracing mobility, and accessing technology. Gender disparities persist in all three areas, resulting in women lagging behind their men counterparts. These disparities can stem from various factors, including societal norms, limited access to education and training opportunities, and unconscious biases that hinder women's advancement.
Without policy interventions aimed at addressing these gender disparities and supporting women in their journey toward adapting to automation, the most likely outcome is an exacerbation of existing inequalities. The automation-driven changes in the workforce have the potential to widen the gaps in wealth, income, and power between men and women. To prevent this outcome and foster a more inclusive and equitable future, it is crucial to implement policies that promote equal access to education and training, facilitate mobility opportunities, and bridge the digital divide.
