Gender Based Violence in Sports
At Genderscope, we recognize the prevalence of gender-based violence in sports and the urgent need to address this issue. Gender-based violence, including verbal/non-verbal sexual harassment, sexual violence, abuse, and hate speech, exists in all aspects of our society, including the realm of sports. However, the research and awareness regarding this issue in sports are still limited.
- Knowledge Gap and Lack of Research: Gender-based violence in sports often goes unnoticed and underreported due to its low visibility and the perception of sports as a predominantly man activity. There is a lack of research and awareness regarding gender-based violence as an important factor within sports. This knowledge gap inhibits our understanding of the extent and impact of gender-based violence in sports.
- Prevention Measures and Data Collection: While there are ongoing efforts across the world to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence in sports, there is still a scarcity of long-lasting prevention measures and comprehensive data. Existing data, often collected through self-completion surveys, indicates the severity of gender-based violence within sports. Studies have shown high rates of physiological, physical, and sexual violence experienced by athletes, particularly minors. It is important to note that these datasets do not capture the full extent of gender-based violence due to underreporting, which can be attributed to the lack of recognition and support services for victims.
- Gender-Based Violence and LGBTQ+ Athletes: Verbal and physical violence in sports disproportionately affects LGBTQ+ athletes. Studies have shown high rates of verbal violence experienced by lesbian and gay athletes, highlighting the increased risk they face. This highlights the importance of addressing gender-based violence as it intersects with sexual orientation and gender identity, creating an environment of discrimination and exclusion.
- Challenging Norms and Creating Safe Spaces: Addressing gender-based violence in sports is essential for gender mainstreaming and challenging stereotypes and norms related to gender and sexuality. By addressing this issue, we aim to create safe and inclusive spaces within the world of sports, where women and LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive and develop. It is crucial to envision sports as a space that fosters social inclusion, development, and safety for all participants.
Join us and work towards creating a sporting environment that promotes equality, respect, and the well-being of all athletes, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
